Meet Flippin’ Frogs and Slitherin’ Snakes at Charlotte Nature Museum

Saturday, September 17, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

September 12, 2011

Charlotte, NC – Don’t jump out of your skin yet! Reptiles and amphibians aren’t scary; in fact, these cold-blooded friends do important work nurturing our ecosystems and balancing the natural world. Learn all about frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, salamanders and more when Charlotte Nature Museum hosts its September Creature Feature: Flippin’ Frogs and Slitherin’ Snakes on Saturday, September 17, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Interact with experts from the field while viewing live collections that call Charlotte Nature Museum home, including “Texas Pete”, the Texas Tortoise [Gopherus berlandieri]. Other special friends will include a diamondback terrapin [Malaclemys terrapin], poison dart frogs [Denobrates sp.] and the Museum’s newest resident, Snappy, an American alligator [Alligator mississippienis]. Did you know that North Carolina has one of the largest populations of salamanders in the country because of its diverse geography, including 46 different species? Increase your scales of knowledge as you meet a variety of snakes and other reptiles while learning about their habitat and amazing adaptations.

Wiggle over to The Naturalist Lab to make your own special snake out of recyclable materials. Don’t miss “Growing Up Wild”, an entertaining Puppet Show, and story time that includes ”Crocodile Tears”, by Joyce Dunbar, “A Home for Little Turtle,” by Deborah Kovacs and “The Mixed-Up Chameleon”, by Eric Carle. Slap snake bracelets, Geckoz stuffed reptiles, squishy frogs and other hoppin’ gifts will be available for sale in Trail’s End Store – a portion of the proceeds supports Museum programs.

Creature Features, presented by Earth Fare with support from The Guild of Discovery Place and Charlotte Nature Museum, are monthly special events and include crafts, puppet shows, storytelling and refreshments (while supplies last). Creature Feature activities are free with Museum admission. Admission: $6 ages two and older, younger-than-two and Members are free. Parking is free.
