Texas Pete, our Texas Tortoise (Gopherus berlandieri) who should not to be confused with the famous hot sauce, is a Museum favorite and one of the many ambassador species of chelonians that call Charlotte Nature Museum home.

What are chelonians you ask? These creatures are from the reptile family, which includes tortoises, turtles and terrapins; all have scales, lay eggs and are ectothermic (this may sound like something from a sci-fi film but it means they are cold-blooded).

Every second Saturday, at 2:22 p.m., join a Charlotte Nature Museum Naturalist for Turtles on the Twos and get acquainted with Hercules, our rescued diamond back terrapin and his many friends. Turtles, tortoise or terrapins – who knows, we do and you will too! Turtles on the Twos is FREE with Museum admission.
