The Owls Are Nesting -- See Below!
A stroll through the Paw Paw Nature Trail is enchanting. The forest is alive with wildlife, "old trees" and seasonal wildflowers. A stroll through the 100-year-old forest will enchant the young and young-at-heart with an easy to navigate loop. Look high to catch a glimpse of barred owls (Strix varia), look low to spy box turtles and rare seasonal wildflowers such as Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) and bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis).
NEW, Check out our parents to be on the Paw Paw Nature Trail's Owl Cam:
Click below to see a live stream from our Owl Cam of a nesting pair of wild barred owls (Strix varia).
Check back often -- barred owls nest only once a year! The owls began nesting on February 27 and the incubation period is approximately 30 days.
The camera is placed high in the tree cavity and provides a birds eye view into the nest, which is not visible from the outside on the trail. The female occupies about 2/3 of the field of view and if you look for the distinct pale bars on her tail feathers you can determine her position in the nest. You may also catch a glimpse of the male delivering food (nest delivery could be anything tasty from a mouse to crayfish.)
